2017 Pinot Noir, Fiddlestix 1.5L

2017 Pinot Noir, Fiddlestix 1.5L

The Fiddlestix vineyard performed admirably in 2017 despite the difficult conditions found elsewhere in Sta. Rita Hills. Yields were down, of course, but not nearly as dramatically as some other vineyards. Older vines (now 20 years old) are established and able to withstand difficult weather better than others. Grapes from five separate blocks (five different clones) comprise this wine, each of which was individually monitored, harvested, fermented, barreled, and aged. We fermented this wine with selective use of whole clusters (15% of the blend). The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (30% new).

The 2017 version of this wine is concentrated and deep, with its signature red fruit character, coiled around sufficient tannins to repay aging. The texture is velvety as usual, and the wine finishes very long, with great spice intrigue from whole clusters and well-integrated new oak. Jeb Dunnuck rated this wine 94 points.
