Vogelzang is situated on a gently sloping bed of well-drained, gravelly loam soil with patches of serpentinite. Now over 25 years old, these vines produce extraordinary Sauvignon Balance when farmed carefully for low yields and vine balance. Thus, we purchase fruit here on a per acre basis and, in partnership with Juve Buonrostro of Coastal Vineyard Care and his team, employ specialized pruning, shoot thinning, canopy management and irrigation strategies to ensure ideal fruit quality. Blocks include: D (clone 1), P (clone 1) and M-1 (musque). Wines from Vogelzang typically display intense tropical aromas and flavors (pineapple, mango, guava) balanced by brilliant, mineral laced acidity, which we find appropriate for aging in French oak barrels.
2023 was a spectacular vintage in Happy Canyon, a product of good rainfall, a cool spring, and occasional short periods of moderate heat in the summer before a moderate September allowed measured, even ripening.
The 2023 Vogelzang spent 17 months on its lees in 100% French oak barriques and 276 L “cigars”, 18% of which were new. Compelling now, it will age well on its incredible acidity and balance.
96 Points Jeb Dunnuck, who said, “Medium to full-bodied, it has a pure, graceful mouthfeel, beautifully integrated acidity, and a great finish…. I'd happily put this in a blind lineup with the best Bordeaux Blanc out there.”
