The 2022 Seven is comprised of 95% Syrah, 4% Grenache and 1% Viognier sourced from top-flight vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills and Ballard Canyon: 53% John Sebastiano (Sta. Rita Hills) 22% Spear (Sta. Rita Hills) 18% Stolpman (Ballard Canyon) 5% Larner (Ballard Canyon) 2% Kimsey (Ballard Canyon) The wine was aged in neutral French oak (228L barriques, 400L, and 500L puncheons) for 9 months before being blended and then returned to barrel for an additional 8 months aging before bottling.
2022 was an excellent vintage for Syrah, as the heat waves of August and September actually helped ripening the Syrah in an otherwise cool to cold year. Yields were generally low, but quality was high.
We are thrilled with the performance of this wine, as, right out of the gate, it is already beginning to show explosive, complex aromatics (red, blue and black fruits, spices and meats), lovely texture with vibrant, layered red, blue and purple fruits, but also plenty of acidity and tannic structure to provide a long finish for such a young wine. We expect this wine to continue to develop for 5-10 years and to last for well over a decade after that.
This wine was rated 95 points by Antonio Galloni at Vinous.Galloni said “Explosive and vibrant, the 2022 is wonderfully exciting right out of the gate. Vibrant red fruit, blood orange, olive and white pepper all soar out of the glass. The 2022 is superb.”The Wine Advocate (Matthew Luczy) gave 94 points stating “A dark, opaque nose chock-full of grilled meat, barbecue smoke, black pepper and saffron aromas is a fitting prelude to the velvety, savory and luxurious palate. The finish is impressive in its momentous power, soaring length and elegant yet persistent grip.”Jeb Dunnuck gave it 94 Points with stellar notes as well.
